Master Your Move: Expert Tips for a Stress-Free Relocation

Moving to a new home is often a daunting task, filled with potential for stress and mishaps. To ease the process, experts from the removal industry offer practical advice aimed at ensuring a smooth transition. With the right preparation, individuals can successfully transport their belongings without damage or injury.

Planning Ahead Reduces Stress

Manny Sahmbi, director of Happy2Move, a removals company based in Slough, highlights the importance of time management in moving. His team can typically pack up a standard four-bedroom house in just one day. For those opting to manage their own move, he suggests a timeline of one week for a one-bedroom home and up to two weeks for larger residences.

Hannah Crawford, known as Han With a Van in North London, echoes this sentiment. She advises against relying solely on weekends for packing, emphasizing that adequate time is essential for a successful move. “If you don’t give yourself enough time, then everything takes much longer to settle down at the other end,” she notes.

Practical Packing Strategies

Proper packing is vital to avoid breakages. Sahmbi cautions against the common mistake of using bags instead of boxes. “The number of times I’ve shown up and people have everything in bags… is surprising,” he says. Bags can be difficult to stack and carry, making strong moving boxes a better choice.

Crawford recommends sourcing boxes designed for moving, as they are sturdier than typical supermarket boxes, which often lack durability. “You don’t want to pack all of your granny’s mugs only to have the box collapse,” she warns. For eco-conscious movers, Sahmbi suggests checking platforms like Facebook Marketplace for recyclable boxes from recent movers.

When packing, it is crucial to label boxes clearly. Henry Marino-Hacking from Selected Removals stresses the importance of marking fragile items and using the term “top box” for extremely delicate contents. This helps ensure careful handling during transport.

Safety and Efficiency During the Move

Assembling and moving furniture can pose risks if not approached sensibly. Sahmbi advises lifting with the legs to protect the back and recommends the use of sack trucks for heavier items. “Moving is not an ideal solo sport, so recruit your friends,” Crawford adds, emphasizing the need for assistance with bulky or heavy objects.

In addition to ensuring personal safety, it is important to protect belongings during transit. Sahmbi uses packing materials such as bubble wrap or packing paper for fragile items, and he recommends transporting items like plates and televisions upright to avoid damage.

Crawford further suggests preparing a “first night kit” that includes essential items like toiletries and a kettle. This can alleviate the frustration of searching through numerous boxes upon arrival at the new home.

Final Preparations and Emotional Considerations

Before leaving the old residence, Marino-Hacking advises checking every cupboard and the loft to ensure nothing is forgotten. He also highlights the importance of managing the emotional aspects of moving, suggesting individuals take a moment to say goodbye to their old home.

Crawford encourages movers to remain well-fueled throughout the day. “Go for a big breakfast first, and make sure you stop for lunch,” she advises. This helps maintain energy levels and reduces the likelihood of fatigue impacting the move.

Moving can be a significant life change, often accompanied by mixed emotions. By following these expert tips, individuals can navigate the complexities of relocation more effectively, ensuring a smoother transition to their new home.
