Mater Health, Queensland’s largest Catholic not-for-profit hospital group, has acquired Gold Coast Private Hospital from Healthscope. This transaction follows Healthscope’s recent receivership, during which it has been divesting its hospital portfolio to address significant financial difficulties.
Gold Coast Private Hospital, which boasts 331 beds, was one of Healthscope’s largest facilities. While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the acquisition is part of a broader strategy overseen by the receiver, McGrathNicol, to recover a portion of the company’s substantial debt, estimated at $1.6 billion.
Securing Employment and Services
Patrick Brady, chairman of Mater Health, expressed that this purchase ensures long-term security for the hospital’s approximately 1,400 employees and guarantees the continuation of vital private maternity services at the Southport location. Mater operates 11 hospitals across Queensland and aims to enhance its healthcare offerings through this acquisition.
Brady emphasized the financial rationale behind the purchase, stating, “The costs of constructing new hospitals are significant – Mater’s new Springfield hospital will cost more than $450 million and is around half the size of Gold Coast Private Hospital – so this purchase represents an exceptional expansion strategy for Mater.”
Gold Coast Private Hospital, which opened its doors in 2016 at a construction cost of $230 million, underwent a significant expansion in 2018, incurring an additional $50 million in expenditures.
Context of Healthscope’s Financial Challenges
The acquisition follows a series of financial maneuvers by Healthscope, including a recent agreement with Ramsay Health Care, which purchased another facility for $251 million. Additionally, the Catholic healthcare provider Calvary acquired the Hobart Private Hospital and Holmesglen Private Hospital in Melbourne.
Last year, Healthscope’s receivers agreed to return a 494-bed hospital to the New South Wales government as part of a $190 million deal. These transactions reflect the ongoing efforts to stabilize Healthscope’s operations while ensuring that essential healthcare services continue in the communities it serves.
This acquisition marks an important chapter for both Mater Health and the Gold Coast Private Hospital, reinforcing Mater’s commitment to expanding its healthcare capacity in Queensland while securing employment and vital health services for the region.
