Nature Walks Enhance Women’s Mental Health, Study Reveals

A recent study conducted by People and Nature in collaboration with Griffith University has revealed that nature walks can significantly improve women’s mental health and potentially increase their longevity. Over the course of a 12-week training program for Coastrek, researchers tracked more than 400 women, measuring health outcomes before and after the training, while comparing results with a control group.

The study found that engaging in nature walks uniquely combines three critical components: physical movement, social connection, and a sense of purpose. These elements are essential for enhancing mental well-being and promoting longevity. According to Di Westaway OAM, founder of Coastrek and Wild Women on Top, “Nature may be Australia’s most underrated mental health treatment.” She emphasized that the benefits of outdoor activities have been well recognized among participants.

Participants in the Coastrek program reported that challenging themselves while connecting with others outdoors significantly boosted their happiness and health. Westaway described how “the right walk, with the right women, in the right place, can truly change your life.”

The findings are timely, as participation in bushwalking and hiking across Australia has surged dramatically. The number of participants rose from 800,000 in 2015 to a projected 3.8 million by 2024-25. Notably, women now make up more than half of all hikers, with those aged 35 to 64 experiencing the fastest growth in participation. Many cite mental well-being, connection with others, and time spent outdoors as their primary motivators for engaging in these activities.

Coastrek is designed for women with busy lifestyles, combining guided training with community support and adventure. This approach highlights how low-cost, preventive lifestyle interventions can yield significant mental and physical health benefits. Westaway encourages women seeking to enhance their well-being to consider joining the program: “If you want to boost your well-being, strengthen your mental health and even add years to your happiest life, here’s the prescription: grab your girlfriends, lace up your walking shoes, and hit the trail.”

The next Coastrek season will begin on 27 March 2026 on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, with events scheduled to take place nationally across iconic coastal and wilderness locations. Women interested in reclaiming their health, confidence, and connections can sign up for the 2026 Coastrek events, joining thousands of others in this empowering initiative, one step at a time.
