A significant milestone in healthcare services has been achieved with the completion of a new nine-storey building at St George Hospital. This state-of-the-art facility, located on Kensington Street, will enhance community and outpatient care by consolidating various health services under one roof. The building is set to open in the coming months, with final preparations underway to ensure staff and facilities are ready to welcome patients.
The new building represents a substantial investment of $411 million and is part of the Stage 3 Redevelopment of the hospital. This redevelopment stems from the Code Red campaign, initiated over a decade ago by medical professionals and the local community, aimed at improving healthcare services in the area. In a joint statement, Premier Chris Minns and Health Minister Ryan Park expressed their excitement about the facility’s upcoming launch, highlighting its potential to significantly improve patient care.
Enhanced Services for Patients
One of the standout features of the new building is its focus on rehabilitation services. For the first time at St George Hospital, patients recovering from brain injuries will have access to structured rehabilitation programs designed to help them regain vital skills and transition back home safely.
Additionally, the new facility will introduce a behavioural support unit aimed at treating and managing older patients with cognitive conditions, such as dementia and delirium. Minister Park emphasized the importance of these services, stating, “The new building will significantly enhance our ability to provide specialized care to those who need it most.”
The Stage 3 Redevelopment complements previous improvements made to the hospital, including a newly completed Emergency Department, a nine-level acute services building, and an upgraded birthing suite and operating theatre. With these enhancements, the hospital aims to provide seamless care for its patients, reducing the need for services to be delivered from multiple locations across the campus.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The redevelopment project has made a notable contribution to the local economy, supporting approximately 750 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs throughout its duration. This investment not only enhances healthcare services but also stimulates economic growth in the region.
As St George Hospital prepares to open this new facility, it is poised to become a central hub for healthcare services in the community. The integration of specialized rehabilitation and cognitive care is expected to improve patient outcomes and streamline access to essential health services.
