Oral Semaglutide Reduces Heart Risks in Diabetics, Study Reveals

A recent analysis indicates that taking oral semaglutide may significantly lower the risk of heart-related hospitalizations and deaths for individuals with a history of heart failure and type 2 diabetes. The study, reexamining data from a clinical trial funded by Novo Nordisk, involved nearly 9,650 participants across 33 countries between 2019 and 2021, with an average follow-up period of almost four years.

The double-blind study revealed that participants with a history of heart failure experienced a 22 percent reduction in adverse cardiovascular events while taking a daily semaglutide pill compared to those receiving a placebo. Notably, no heart health benefits were observed in participants without pre-existing heart conditions.

Study Insights and Limitations

The findings, published in JAMA, support the potential advantages of oral semaglutide in mitigating heart failure events among individuals with both type 2 diabetes and heart conditions. Rodica Pop-Busui, a diabetologist at Oregon Health & Science University, and her team acknowledged certain limitations in their analysis, such as the small number of participants in some subgroups.

Previous research has also indicated that semaglutide can lead to a nearly 20 percent reduction in cardiovascular events—including strokes and heart attacks—over approximately three years. Importantly, these cardiovascular benefits appear to manifest independently of weight loss.

While the results are promising, caution is warranted. Animal studies have raised concerns about potential risks, highlighting that semaglutide may lead to serious issues alongside common side effects like nausea and vomiting. A study in 2024 involving mice showed that semaglutide could have a shrinking effect on a specific type of heart muscle. Other research has noted significant loss of skeletal muscle, alongside the desired fat loss and anti-diabetic effects.

Considerations for Use

As with any medication, the administration of semaglutide should be closely monitored for undesirable side effects, particularly as researchers continue to explore its long-term impacts. Type 2 diabetes affects approximately 500 million people worldwide, with heart failure being one of its most prevalent complications. For those at risk, the benefits of semaglutide may outweigh potential risks when used under appropriate medical supervision.

Alternative treatments, such as bariatric surgery, have been shown to offer better blood sugar control compared to semaglutide. Furthermore, as the underlying mechanisms of semaglutide’s influence on cardiovascular disease remain unclear, healthcare professionals have urged caution regarding the widespread prescription of this medication beyond its primary indications for weight loss and diabetes management.
