New Zealand Police have confirmed the recovery of a body in Port Waikato, believed to be that of a man who went missing while jet skiing on December 25, 2023. The recovery operation, which involved the Police Eagle helicopter, concluded a search that began shortly after the individual was reported missing.
Police efforts intensified on Christmas Day when the man failed to return from his outing. Witnesses reported seeing him jet skiing in the area, prompting immediate concern for his safety. Despite extensive search operations, including aerial and water searches, initial efforts to locate him were unsuccessful.
The discovery was made by the Police Eagle helicopter, which is equipped for such search and rescue operations. The police have stated that they will refer the matter to the Coroner for further investigation.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the New Zealand Police expressed their condolences to the family of the missing man. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family during this extremely difficult time,” they said, emphasizing the emotional toll such incidents take on loved ones.
The investigation will focus on the circumstances surrounding the man’s disappearance and the events leading up to the recovery of his body. Authorities aim to provide answers to the family and the community regarding this tragic incident.
This event highlights the risks associated with water sports, particularly during the holiday season when recreational activities typically see an increase. As authorities continue their investigation, they remind individuals to prioritize safety and remain vigilant while engaging in such activities.
