Revolutionary Saliva-Based Pregnancy Test Launches in Australia

SupaMed has launched the world’s first saliva-based pregnancy test, named SaliStickTM, which is now available in Australian pharmacies and Coles stores. This innovative product marks a significant advancement in pregnancy testing, the first major development in over 70 years since the introduction of at-home urine tests in the 1960s. With SaliStickTM, women can test for pregnancy in a hygienic, non-invasive manner in under 15 minutes.

Developed by Salignostics, SaliStickTM detects the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)—a hormone indicative of pregnancy—through a simple mouth swab. The product has already received international recognition, being named one of the Best Inventions of 2023 by TIME Magazine.

Innovative Approach to Pregnancy Testing

“This groundbreaking test represents a major leap in women’s health,” said Michael Cima, Director of SupaMed, a division of CC Supplies. He highlighted that there has been a noticeable shift towards non-invasive saliva tests since the COVID-19 pandemic, during which SupaMed facilitated the distribution of over 60 million such tests in Australia.

Cima emphasized that the user-friendliness and convenience of saliva tests have become increasingly important to consumers. “The SaliStickTM test allows women to share this special milestone with their loved ones more easily,” he added, calling it a genuinely disruptive product in the market.

Traditionally, women have relied on urine-based tests or blood tests in medical settings to confirm pregnancy. The role of saliva in testing has not been extensively explored until now, despite the fact that saliva contains over 5,000 proteins, many of which are similar to those found in blood.

Clinical Validation and Market Demand

The SaliStickTM test boasts impressive clinical validation, with accuracy rates of 96% just one day after a missed period and 97% two days after. According to Dr. Anita Sharma, General Practitioner and Medical Director of Platinum Medical Centre, “Early and accurate detection is crucial for women’s health, and saliva-based tests deliver on both fronts.”

Market research indicates a strong preference for this new testing method, with 68% of women favoring a saliva-based test over traditional urine tests. Another 21% expressed openness to using either method.

Pharmacists have also noted the importance of convenience and privacy in reproductive health. Ms. Riley Price, a pharmacist at Chempro Chemists, stated, “We see firsthand how significant convenience is for our customers. The trends confirm a clear preference for innovative products that align with modern lifestyles.”

Using SaliStickTM involves three straightforward steps, making it accessible for users. The introduction of this product not only revolutionizes pregnancy testing but also signifies a broader trend towards non-invasive medical diagnostics that prioritize user comfort and accuracy.

With SaliStickTM now available in pharmacies and Coles stores across Australia, women can look forward to a more convenient option for confirming pregnancy, marking a notable milestone in personal health technology.
