Boy Hospitalized After Dingo Attack on K’gari Island

A primary-school-aged boy was airlifted to hospital in Brisbane following a dingo attack on K’gari Island. The incident occurred near Coolooloi Creek at approximately 15:00 on March 16, 2024. According to a spokesperson from the Queensland Ambulance Service, the child sustained bites and cuts to his head and was subsequently transported to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in stable condition.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack. A representative from the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation stated that the dingo approached the boy and his grandfather while they were on the beach.

Authorities are urging visitors to K’gari to take necessary precautions when in the presence of wildlife. Recommendations include walking in groups, carrying a stick, and ensuring that children remain within arm’s reach of adults. These guidelines aim to enhance safety and minimize the risk of similar incidents in the future.

This attack highlights the importance of respecting wildlife in natural habitats. As dingo populations are prevalent on K’gari, understanding their behavior and maintaining safe distances is crucial for visitor safety. The investigation by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service will provide further insights into the incident and may lead to additional safety measures for those exploring the island.
