Bushwalkers Rescued After Fall Near Tasmania’s Federation Peak

Three bushwalkers were successfully rescued near Federation Peak in Tasmania’s remote south-west after one of the group fell approximately 5 metres, suffering a non-life-threatening head injury. The incident occurred on March 15, 2024, during a day hike in a notoriously challenging area known for its rugged terrain.

The Tasmanian Police received a distress call around 15:30 local time, alerting them to the fall. Given the location’s isolation, swift action was essential. A rescue team was dispatched immediately, consisting of local police and experienced search and rescue volunteers.

Rescue Operation Details

Rescue teams utilized a helicopter to reach the injured hiker quickly. “The swift response was crucial in ensuring the safety of all involved,” stated a representative from Tasmania Police. The injured walker received immediate medical attention on-site before being airlifted to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.

The remaining bushwalkers, shaken but unharmed, were escorted safely back to their starting point. The incident highlights the potential dangers of hiking in remote areas, particularly for those who may underestimate the challenges posed by variable weather conditions and difficult paths.

While the injured individual’s condition is stable, authorities are reminding outdoor enthusiasts to take necessary precautions when venturing into Tasmania’s wilderness. This includes informing others of their plans, checking weather conditions, and carrying appropriate safety equipment.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared when exploring Tasmania’s stunning natural landscapes. As the region remains a popular destination for bushwalking and adventure tourism, authorities continue to emphasize safety in outdoor activities.
