Plans are underway in Dandenong to honor two prominent community leaders by naming new streets after them. The Greater Dandenong Council has proposed to name the streets Dow Court and Merle Parade in recognition of the late Pat Dow and Merle Mitchell AM. This initiative is part of a larger project that involves the closure of sections of Cheltenham Road and Webster Street as part of a level crossing removal effort.
Greater Dandenong Mayor Sophie Tan emphasized the significance of this proposal, highlighting the impact both women had on the community. “Pat and Merle were extraordinary women whose lifelong commitment to community helped shape the Greater Dandenong we know today,” Tan stated. She added that naming these roads serves to ensure their legacy continues, guiding and inspiring future generations.
Pat Dow was a dedicated volunteer whose contributions spanned decades. She was actively involved with organizations such as the Dandenong Hospital Auxiliary, Red Cross, and Meals on Wheels. Dow also played a crucial role in a ten-year fundraising campaign for the 12th Dandenong North Scout Hall and supported the Dandenong Festival of Music and Art for Youth.
In a statement from Dow’s sons—Chris, Mike, and Greg—the family expressed their honor at the recognition. “Pat devoted her life to supporting and uplifting others, and she cared deeply about the Dandenong community,” they said. “Knowing her legacy will be recognized in this way means a great deal to us.”
On the other hand, Merle Mitchell was a trailblazer in social justice and community cohesion. As the former CEO of the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS), she advocated for various causes, including age-related issues and support for refugees. Through the Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau (SCAAB), Mitchell was instrumental in assisting approximately 30,000 refugees during the 1970s.
Mitchell’s son, Rick, noted her long-standing connection to the community, having lived in Dandenong and Springvale for most of her life. “We know she would have been absolutely delighted and honoured that a street be named after her,” he said.
Both Dow and Mitchell were recognized as Greater Dandenong Living Treasures in their later years. Under the proposed plan, Dow Court will emerge from the closure of Webster Street at the railway line, while Merle Parade will occupy a discontinued section between Foster Street and Cheltenham Road. Additionally, Cheltenham Road will be redirected under the rail line and extended to Lonsdale Street.
As the designated naming authority for local roads, the City of Greater Dandenong is collaborating with the Victorian Government’s Department of Transport and Planning and the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) to advance these proposals. The public can provide feedback on the proposed street names until March 13, 2024.
