A 71-year-old British man has been charged with assaulting a young gay man during a cruise from New Zealand to Australia. The incident allegedly occurred on the Discovery Princess before the ship arrived in Sydney on January 31, 2024. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) arrested the man after the cruise ended, acting on reports of the altercation.
Passengers aboard the cruise reported that the elderly man subjected the young passenger to verbal abuse regarding his sexuality. The situation escalated into a physical confrontation shortly before midnight. If convicted, the accused could face up to five years in prison after being charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.
Legal Framework and Response
According to Trevor Robinson, acting superintendent of the AFP’s detective unit, Australian law applies to incidents occurring at sea on vessels associated with Australia. “Where Australian law applies under the Crimes at Sea framework, the AFP will move swiftly to investigate incidents and bring alleged offenders before the courts,” Robinson stated.
He highlighted the collaboration between law enforcement and cruise operators to ensure passenger safety. “We work closely with cruise operators and maritime partners to ensure the safety of passengers and crew, and to make it clear unlawful behaviour on vessels connected to Australia will be addressed,” he added.
The man is scheduled to appear in a Sydney Court next week, where he will face the charges stemming from the incident. The case has raised important discussions about safety and conduct aboard cruise ships, particularly concerning the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals.
This incident underscores the need for vigilance in protecting passengers from harassment and violence, regardless of their sexual orientation. As the legal proceedings unfold, the actions taken by authorities will be closely observed by both the public and advocacy groups dedicated to promoting equality and safety for all individuals.
