Kerren Kernaghan Honored for Over Two Decades of Service

Kerren Kernaghan of Lennox Head has been awarded the prestigious Public School Parent and Volunteer of the Year award by the NSW Public Education Foundation. The ceremony took place at Sydney Town Hall, recognizing her dedicated contributions to the Lennox Head Public School over the past 21 years.

The award celebrates individuals who significantly impact their communities through school involvement, and Kernaghan’s volunteer work has endured even after her five children left the school. She described the institution as “like my second home,” illustrating her deep connection to the community.

Longstanding Commitment to Education

Kernen, who was born and raised in Lennox Head, attended Lennox Public School herself, becoming the school’s dux in 1987. Her extensive service includes holding various leadership roles within the Parents and Citizens (P&C) Committee, where she has served as President, Vice-President, and Secretary.

In addition to her committee roles, Kernaghan also runs a local dance program known as Heart of Dance, which she operates alongside her two daughters. She further contributes to the community by participating on the North Coast Dance Festival Committee.

Deb Langfield, Principal of Lennox Head Public School, praised Kernaghan’s dedication, stating, “Kerren is an insightful and collaborative community member. She promotes and champions the values of public education.”

A Personal Journey of Community Engagement

Kernaghan expressed that her involvement in school activities has allowed her to forge lasting friendships. “It’s a great way of meeting new people. I met two of my best friends by getting involved in the school,” she noted, highlighting the personal connections formed through her volunteering efforts.

The recognition from the NSW Public Education Foundation not only honors Kernaghan’s individual contributions but also serves as an inspiration for other community members to engage in local educational initiatives. Her commitment demonstrates how volunteering can foster a sense of belonging and enhance community ties.

Kernaghan’s story underlines the vital role that dedicated individuals play in supporting public education, making a lasting impact on both students and the broader community.
