Lake Primary School Commemorates Veterans with Lasting Tribute

The legacy of three former students from Lake Primary School has been permanently memorialized in a garden within the school grounds. On October 10, 2023, one-hundred-year-old World War II veteran John ‘Jack’ Forbes joined family members, along with Brad McGlashan, vice president of the Mildura Returned and Services League (RSL), and secretary Scott Richards, to lay three commemorative pavers.

The event not only honored Forbes but also recognized the contributions of fellow veterans who attended Lake Primary School. The pavers serve as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served in the armed forces, aiming to inspire future generations of students.

In his remarks, Jack Forbes reflected on his experiences during the war and expressed gratitude for the recognition. He emphasized the importance of remembering these acts of bravery and the need to ensure that the stories of veterans continue to be shared.

The initiative stemmed from a collaborative effort between the school and the Mildura RSL. Brad McGlashan highlighted the significance of the memorial, stating, “It’s vital that we honor our veterans, and this memorial allows the community to reflect on their sacrifices and contributions.”

The school principal expressed pride in the new memorial, reinforcing the school’s commitment to teaching students about history and the importance of service. By embedding this tribute into the fabric of the school, educators hope to cultivate a sense of respect and appreciation for those who have served.

As the pavers were laid, family members shared personal anecdotes about their loved ones’ service, creating an emotional atmosphere filled with pride and remembrance. The ceremony attracted various members of the community, highlighting the collective effort to honor those who have sacrificed for their country.

This memorial at Lake Primary School stands as a testament to the courage and dedication of veterans. As students walk through the garden, they will be reminded of the enduring legacy of service and the importance of preserving history for future generations.
