Doctors at Austin Health in Australia faced a harrowing challenge in July 2023 when they treated victims of mushroom poisoning linked to a meal prepared by Erin Patterson. The victims, Heather Wilkinson, Don Patterson, and Gail Patterson, succumbed to the toxic effects of death cap mushrooms after consuming a beef Wellington dish at Patterson’s residence in Leongatha. Ian Patterson, the only survivor, experienced severe symptoms but ultimately recovered.
The medical team, led by Dr. Stephen Warrillow, Director of Intensive Care, detailed the agonizing efforts made to save the victims who arrived at the hospital with critical organ failures. “They were devastatingly unwell,” Dr. Warrillow recounted, noting that the liver was the first organ to fail due to the presence of the Amanita toxin. As the liver deteriorated, other organs began to fail, leading to a cascade of systemic issues, including kidney and circulatory failure.
Critical Care and Treatments
Dr. Warrillow explained that all four patients required mechanical ventilation and dialysis-like treatments to manage the elevated toxin levels in their systems. “We also administered specific therapies to protect the liver from further injury,” he said, describing the use of multi-dose activated charcoal and the medication Silibinin to combat the effects of the Amanita toxin.
Despite the extensive medical interventions, three of the four patients did not survive. Both Gail Patterson and Heather Wilkinson were deemed too ill to undergo liver transplants. Don Patterson received a transplant but ultimately died due to the poisoning. The complexity of liver transplants, which involves significant risk and a lengthy surgical process, was a critical factor in the decision-making for these patients.
The sole survivor, Ian Wilkinson, displayed remarkable resilience, according to Dr. Warrillow. He had entered multiple organ failure and presented with dangerously high levels of toxins in his blood. “It’s quite a remarkable outcome for him that he was ultimately able to survive and recover,” Dr. Warrillow stated, crediting the bedside team for their dedication and the supportive role of Ian’s family.
Recollections of a Distressing Case
The medical team was not only focused on the physical recovery of the patients but also faced the emotional toll of the situation. Dr. Chris Webster, another physician involved in the case, expressed deep sorrow at the loss of life. Having treated Heather Wilkinson previously, he described the moment she was taken into the ambulance as particularly distressing, especially as she thanked him for his care, unaware of her dire circumstances.
Dr. Webster’s interactions with Erin Patterson during the hospital visit raised suspicions. He recalled her nonchalant demeanor as she claimed to have purchased the mushrooms from a local grocery store. “There was no doubt in my mind from the moment she said ‘Woolworths’ that she was guilty of deliberately putting these poisonous mushrooms in the meal,” he remarked.
The situation escalated when Dr. Webster, concerned for the safety of the victims, called the police shortly after Patterson left the hospital. “When I dialed that last zero, I knew that what I was about to say was going to be evidence in a court trial one day,” he reflected. This call became pivotal in the ensuing investigation and trial.
Erin Patterson was subsequently convicted of three counts of murder and attempted murder. Dr. Webster characterized her actions as sociopathic, suggesting a lack of empathy and a willingness to harm others for personal gain. He speculated on her motive, indicating that her intent was to eliminate her estranged husband’s family from her life.
