Mission Australia is marking a significant milestone this year, celebrating fifty years of its Christmas Lunch in the Park event in Perth. What began as a modest sausage sizzle in 1975 has transformed into a major community gathering that serves over 73,450 meals to those in need. This annual event not only provides a festive meal but also offers entertainment and a sense of connection for some of Perth’s most vulnerable residents.
Christmas Lunch in the Park originated when a small group from Mission Australia, then called Jesus People Welfare Services, sought support from local businesses to provide food for the homeless. Their efforts have since grown into the largest event of its kind in Australia, according to event manager Carley Smith. “Over the last 50 years, Christmas Lunch in the Park has become a vital part of our community,” she said.
The event requires the support of over 350 volunteers to spread joy and warmth. Robert D’Souza, a Redcliffe resident who has volunteered for more than half of the event’s history, shared, “One thing I’ve loved over the last 27 years is seeing people enjoying the spirit of Christmas Lunch in the Park — especially those who may otherwise spend the day alone.” He encourages others to join in: “You will be surprised at the feeling and satisfaction you get from helping and serving others.”
In addition to a three-course meal, the event will feature a “Wellness Zone” offering free haircuts, showers, and clothing to those in need. Children attending will receive presents from Santa, while every adult will receive a care pack containing personal care items and non-perishable food for the days after Christmas when many services are closed.
Despite the festive atmosphere, the need for such support is pressing. “Sadly, the need in WA continues to grow amid one of the worst housing and cost-of-living crises seen in a generation,” Ms. Smith stated. “We hope one day people won’t need to turn up to our event, but until then, we’ll be here to share a delicious three-course meal, complemented by the warmth of companionship and uplifting festive music.”
Those interested in contributing can “donate a plate” online, with $140 providing Christmas lunch, gifts, and care packs for a family of four. The event is supported by the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation and the McCusker Charitable Foundation.
Volunteer registrations close on November 10, 2023. For more information on how to volunteer, donate, or fundraise, please visit christmaslunchinthepark.com.au.
This anniversary not only celebrates the history of the event but also highlights the ongoing commitment of Mission Australia to support the community, ensuring that no one has to spend Christmas alone or without a meal.
