Mukund Narayanamurti Honoured for Service on Australia Day 2026

Mukund Narayanamurti will receive recognition for his significant contributions to enhancing trade and investment ties between Australia and Southeast Asia during the Australia Day Honours on January 26, 2026. This honour reflects his unwavering dedication to fostering Australia’s relationships within the region throughout his career.

Having devoted over 25 years to this mission, Narayanamurti expressed his passion for Southeast Asia’s diverse cultures, histories, and markets. “I’ve focused my entire career on Australia’s relationship with our region,” he stated, highlighting his love for every country within Southeast Asia.

A Career Shaped by Regional Engagement

Narayanamurti’s career trajectory includes extensive work in Greater China, Northeast Asia, and South Asia. In 2020, he made a pivotal decision to relocate to Jakarta, where he took on a key role with the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade). This move positioned him strategically in a region that Australia increasingly recognises as vital to its economic aspirations.

Reflecting on his career, Narayanamurti explained, “Our proximity, economic complementarity, and growing alignment meant that it made sense to focus my career on strengthening Australia’s trade and investment relationship with Southeast Asia.” His efforts culminated in leading Austrade’s involvement in the development of ‘Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040’, a major initiative aimed at enhancing economic collaboration in the Indo-Pacific.

Implementing this long-term strategy across ten markets presented substantial challenges. Narayanamurti noted the complexity of aligning with numerous senior stakeholders, including Australia’s Special Envoy for Southeast Asia, Nicholas Moore, along with various ministers and business leaders. He emphasised the importance of consultation and evidence-based decision-making in securing alignment with these key figures.

Building Trust and Understanding

Central to the success of the Southeast Asia Economic Strategy was an extensive consultation process, which included over 750 engagements with stakeholders from both government and business sectors. Narayanamurti credited Moore’s leadership as instrumental in this process, stating, “He is one of the most consequential leaders I’ve worked with.”

For Narayanamurti, achieving success in Southeast Asia hinges on cultural understanding and the relationships developed over time. He believes that language and cultural comprehension are critical for effectively engaging with regional counterparts. “Cross cultural understanding is crucial to engage deeply with counterparts in the region,” he affirmed.

He praised the work of Australia’s diplomatic and trade officials in Southeast Asia, acknowledging the exceptional leadership of Heads of Mission and Austrade teams. “I learnt tremendously from them on how to build strong personal relationships that can aid economic diplomacy,” he added.

Over the last decade, Narayanamurti has observed a maturation in Australian business engagement with Southeast Asia. While he noted increasing sophistication and confidence, he also pointed out the unevenness across various sectors and markets. “Southeast Asia is not a homogenous region, and the opportunity set varies across sectors and markets,” he said, advocating for a prudent approach to risk assessment in business dealings.

Despite progress, misconceptions persist regarding Australian businesses exiting the region. Narayanamurti explained, “One of the misconceptions is that when Australian businesses exit the region it must be due to a failure.” He clarified that these exits are often steeped in strategic decisions rather than outright failures.

As geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, Narayanamurti views the Southeast Asia Economic Strategy as a clear indication of Australia’s commitment to the region. “It offers a coherent, long-term narrative of how we will engage with the region to drive two-way trade and two-way investment,” he concluded, reinforcing the importance of proactive engagement in shaping future relations.

The recognition of Mukund Narayanamurti on Australia Day not only celebrates his individual accomplishments but also highlights the broader significance of Australia’s engagement with Southeast Asia in an increasingly interconnected world.
