New $700 Million Sydney Fish Market Delayed Until January 2024

The highly anticipated new $700 million Sydney Fish Market will not open in time for Christmas as construction at Blackwattle Bay is expected to be completed by mid-November. However, the official opening has been scheduled for January 19, 2024. Sydney Fish Market CEO Daniel Jarosch explained that this timeline allows tenants to finish their fit-outs and adequately prepare for a successful launch.

The decision for a January opening aims to create a memorable experience for visitors. “A January opening gives tenants the time to finish fit-outs this year, and then train staff and prepare operationally,” Jarosch stated. He emphasized that they want to deliver an incredible experience right from day one.

Despite the delay, seafood lovers will still have access to their favorite products during the festive season at the existing site in Pyrmont. The market will host a 36-Hour Seafood Marathon, where record numbers of attendees are expected to enjoy a final celebration at the current location. “It’s the end of an era and the beginning of something extraordinary,” Jarosch commented, highlighting the significance of this transition.

The new fish market is designed to attract over 6 million visitors each year. Premier Chris Minns described the new facility as “a magnet” for tourists and a “must-see destination.” Jarosch expressed hope that it will be a place where people will return time and again, enhancing Sydney’s reputation as a culinary hub.

Additionally, the new market will feature extended trading hours until 10 PM, a significant increase from the previous closing time of 4 PM. These extended hours aim to encourage visitors to enjoy the sunset while taking in views of the Anzac Bridge.

In the wake of the market’s development, the government has earmarked the land at the old fish market site for residential development, which could see the construction of up to 1,200 homes. As the community looks forward to the new market, it signals a transformative moment for Sydney’s seafood trade and waterfront landscape.
