New Rooftop Bar Above Delivers Intimate Summer Experience

A new rooftop bar, Above, has opened at Ovolo The Valley in Brisbane, offering an intimate setting just in time for the summer season. The venue, which opened to the public on October 23, 2025, features live entertainment four nights a week, a Middle Eastern-inspired menu crafted by a renowned chef, and a range of cocktails and slushies created by an award-winning bartender.

According to Daniel Sprange, the general manager of Ovolo The Valley, a successful rooftop bar must transport its guests to a different experience. He emphasizes, “You want to be wowed and taken somewhere, maybe reminded of somewhere that resonates with you.” With this vision, Above aims to distinguish itself from other larger rooftop venues in Brisbane, emphasizing a more personal atmosphere.

Intimate Design and Culinary Offerings

Set on the seventh floor of the hotel, Above accommodates just 60 guests in a Mediterranean-inspired space designed by BSPN Architecture. The transformation of the rooftop pool deck has replaced sun lounges with rattan tables and chairs, creating a cozy environment with ample greenery. The renovation also included the retile of the pool and a compact bar setup, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

The culinary offerings at Above reflect a collaboration between celebrated consulting chef Justin North and head chef Kya Knights. The menu transitions from traditional Middle Eastern cuisine to an open Mediterranean focus, featuring dishes such as burrata with charcoal salt and sumac dukkah, and sticky honey harissa chicken wings served with lime and labneh.

For those looking to unwind, the drink menu includes an array of cocktails designed by Jake Down, an award-winning bartender. Guests can enjoy signature cocktails, slushy variations, and a well-curated wine list featuring 30 selections, most of which are available by the glass. Additionally, local beers such as Balter XPA and Asahi are offered on tap.

Positive Reception and Future Plans

Since opening, Above has received a warm reception from the local community. Sprange noted, “We’ve had a lot of locals coming through, enjoying the space, which is satisfying. It looks and feels really good.” The bar operates Wednesday to Thursday from 15:00 to 20:00, Friday to Saturday from 13:00 until late, and Sunday from 13:00 to 19:00, providing ample opportunity for visitors to experience its unique offerings.

With its focus on creating a memorable atmosphere combined with quality food and drinks, Above is poised to become a favorite destination for both locals and visitors alike in Brisbane’s vibrant hospitality scene.
