Penola CFS Brigade Celebrates 90 Years of Community Service

Members of the Penola Country Fire Service (CFS) Brigade marked a significant milestone recently, celebrating ninety years of dedicated service to the community. The event took place at the local fire station, featuring an open day that included an awards ceremony and a display of memorabilia reflecting the brigade’s lengthy history.

The celebration held special significance as it also marked the retirement of Fred Stent, who concluded his tenure as the Group Officer of the MacKillop Group after an impressive 57 years of service. Stent received a Commendation from Chief Officer Brett Loughlin in recognition of his long-standing dedication to firefighting. Additionally, he was honored with a special award from the Regional Five Command for his contributions to the brigade and the broader community.

Stent’s distinguished career includes previous roles as the Penola Group Officer and the Wattle Range Group Officer. His contributions to the fire service have not gone unnoticed, as he has also been awarded the prestigious Australian Fire Service Medal for his exemplary service.

During the event, many past members of the Penola Fire Brigade returned to celebrate, alongside official guests including Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll and ward councillor Chris Brodie. The gathering was a testament to the enduring legacy of the brigade and the strong community ties it has fostered over the decades.

In addition to the commendations awarded, several current members of the brigade were recognized for their service with medals presented by Chief Officer Loughlin. Two members received the esteemed Chief Officer Commendations for their outstanding contributions.

A highlight of the day was the unveiling of a new honour board that commemorates the leaders of the Penola Brigade since its inception in 1935. This board serves as a lasting tribute to the individuals who have shaped the brigade’s history.

The success of the celebration was made possible through the efforts of various organizations. Special thanks were extended to the SACWA Penola Terra Rossa Branch for their catering, the Penola History Group for their assistance in compiling historical documents, and Christy Radford/With Love Photography for capturing the day’s moments.

As the Penola CFS Brigade looks to the future, the dedication and service of its members, particularly those like Fred Stent, continue to inspire new generations within the community. This event not only marked a significant anniversary but also reinforced the importance of community spirit and volunteerism in emergency services.
