The Perth Lynx secured a decisive victory against the Canberra Capitals, winning 75-49 on March 11, 2024. This game not only marked the team’s fifth consecutive win but also celebrated coach Ryan Petrik achieving his 70th win, setting a new club record for the most victories by a coach. The match took place at the Perth High Performance Centre, where more than 2,000 fans witnessed the historic moment.

Petrik, who has been at the helm for several seasons, credited his success to the talented players and staff surrounding him. “I’ve had really good players and really good staff. In all honesty, it’s got nothing to do with me,” he stated. This humility, however, did not go unnoticed by his players, particularly captain Anneli Maley, who praised Petrik’s ability to inspire his team.

Captain Maley Shines with Record-Setting Performance

Maley delivered an impressive performance, scoring 16 points and grabbing 21 rebounds, falling just one rebound short of her own club record. Her contributions were pivotal in the Lynx’s second-half surge, where they outscored Canberra 41-17. The Capitals’ total of 49 points represents the lowest score against any Perth team since the franchise rebranded from the West Coast Waves in 2015.

Reflecting on her coach, Maley noted, “He says it’s good players, but people actually want to play for him. That’s probably something he won’t give himself credit for.” She highlighted Petrik’s exceptional basketball knowledge and communication skills, stating, “His basketball brain and ability to see things on the floor and communicate them to his players is the best I’ve ever played for.”

Maley Accepts Opals Selection Snub Gracefully

Earlier this week, Petrik expressed his disbelief that Maley was not selected for the Australian Opals squad. In response, the player remained gracious, acknowledging the competitiveness of the selection process. “People get cut from teams all the time. I’ve been cut from so many teams. Those are hard squads to make,” she explained.

Despite the disappointment, Maley emphasized her commitment to improving her game, stating, “It’s something I want for myself, but I’ll just keep working.” Her determination continues to drive her performance on the court, ensuring that her contributions to the Lynx remain significant.

As the Lynx continue their successful run, Petrik’s milestone serves as a reminder of the collaborative effort behind the team’s achievements. With strong leadership and standout performances like Maley’s, the Perth Lynx are poised to make a significant impact in the league this season.
