Protests Erupt in Kathmandu, At Least 14 Dead Amid Unrest

At least 14 people have died and numerous others have been injured during violent protests in Kathmandu against allegations of government corruption and a recent ban on social media platforms. State television reported that the unrest escalated as thousands of young demonstrators attempted to storm the parliament building, leading to a significant police response.

The protests erupted after the Nepalese government imposed restrictions on access to social media platforms, including Facebook, following claims that the companies had failed to register with local authorities. Demonstrators expressed their outrage, chanting slogans such as “Stop the ban on social media, stop corruption not social media,” while waving the national flags of red and blue.

Police Response and Government Action

In response to the escalating tensions, police utilized live ammunition, tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds. Protesters managed to breach barriers, pushing through barbed wire and overwhelming riot police, who ultimately retreated into the parliament complex for safety. As the situation intensified, officers inside the complex opened fire in an attempt to regain control.

The unrest prompted the deployment of the army to restore order, and a curfew has been imposed around the residence of the Prime Minister and key government areas. The government’s crackdown on social media is part of a broader initiative to address perceived misuse of online platforms, which has sparked widespread dissent among the populace.

Widespread Outcry Against Government Policies

The protests highlight a growing discontent among young people regarding government transparency and accountability. Many view the social media ban as an infringement on their rights and an attempt to silence dissent. The violent clashes in Kathmandu reflect a critical moment in Nepalese politics, as citizens demand both an end to corruption and the protection of their freedom of expression.

As the situation develops, it remains crucial for the government to address the underlying issues that have led to these protests. The international community is watching closely, as further unrest could have significant implications for stability in the region.
