Dr. Ian Charles Ross Holford, a distinguished soil research scientist whose work significantly contributed to agricultural practices in Australia, has passed away at the age of 92. He died on January 10, 2026, after a remarkable career that spanned almost six decades at the Tamworth Agricultural Research Station in New South Wales.
Born on November 27, 1933, Dr. Holford began his tenure with the NSW Department of Agriculture in September 1964. Except for a three-year period in the United Kingdom during his PhD studies and a year spent at Louisiana State University, he remained a dedicated resident of Tamworth. His international work also included significant research in Fiji, where he concentrated on sulfur and pasture nutrition.
Dr. Holford graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1954, later earning a Master’s degree in Agricultural Science in 1964. His PhD was awarded by the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London in 1973. While in the UK, he conducted pivotal research at Rothamsted Research Station, the site of the world’s longest-running continuous pasture trials.
Impact on Soil Science and Agriculture
Colleagues remember Dr. Holford for his extensive contributions to soil science. Graham Crocker, a longtime research partner at the Tamworth station, noted that Dr. Holford’s work focused on soil fertility and the responses of pastures to fertilizers, particularly phosphorus and sulfur. “We had a lot of trials in the Walcha and Guyra areas down to Niangala,” Mr. Crocker explained.
Dr. Holford was instrumental in initiating long-term rotation experiments in Australia, inspired by the 150-year-old Rothamsted pasture study. His research produced significant findings, including the beneficial effects of legumes, particularly lucerne, on sustaining nitrogen nutrition in cereal crops like wheat and sorghum. His two major projects, running from 1966 to 1992, are considered among the longest continuous trials in the country. According to his son, Peter Holford, these projects demonstrated that a healthy lucerne pasture could enhance cereal yields and quality for several years.
Dr. Holford authored approximately 90 scholarly papers, reflecting his prolific contributions to the field. He continued to publish and present at international conferences even after his retirement, solidifying his legacy in agricultural research.
A Lasting Legacy and Personal Life
In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Holford received a Rockefeller Fellowship, an esteemed accolade awarded primarily in the agriculture and public health sectors. His first wife, Gwen Holford, passed away in 1999. He remarried Eunice Orr, who came from a mixed farming background near Parkes, in 2000. Dr. Holford is survived by his children Jenny, David, Stephen, and Peter.
A funeral service will take place at St John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Carthage Street, Tamworth, at 10:30 AM on January 28. Dr. Holford’s contributions to agricultural science will be remembered for their enduring impact on farming practices in Australia and beyond, reflecting his lifelong dedication to advancing the field of soil research.
