At the 2026 Australia Day Community Awards, held at the Union Theatre in Wonthaggi, lifelong community volunteer Rodney McLean, affectionately known as “Young Fella,” was named the Rotary Club of Wonthaggi Citizen of the Year. The recognition highlights Mr. McLean’s extensive contributions to the community, particularly through his work with the Wonthaggi Fire Brigade, Wonthaggi Uncle Bob’s Club, and the Friends of the State Coalmine.
Mr. McLean was joined on stage by his daughters, Julie De Menech and Tanya Coldebella, as he accepted the award from Rotarian Graeme Sprague. The event celebrated individuals who have significantly impacted the local community, emphasizing the importance of communal values and support.
Community Recognitions and Awards
During the ceremony, Rotary Club of Wonthaggi President Leah Montebello addressed the audience, stressing the need for unity in challenging times. “In these tough times of anger, distrust and sadness, we need to pull together, reach out, and ensure no one is left behind,” she stated.
In addition to Mr. McLean, several other notable community members received awards for their service. Elwyn and Jean Matthews from Glen Alvie were presented with a Community Service Award for their extensive involvement with local schools, the Fire Brigade, and the CWA, among other organizations. Their dedication to community service has had a lasting impact on Wonthaggi.
Another award recipient, John Walsh, was recognized for his long-standing contributions to local sports, particularly through his work with the Dalyston Football/Netball Club. His roles as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance, Audit, and Risk Committee at the Miners Dispensary Board also earned him accolades.
Celebrating Community Spirit
Jamie Moresco was acknowledged for his contributions to the Wonthaggi Fire Brigade and local basketball, while Russell Cargill received a Sport and Community Service Award for his leadership as President of the Wonthaggi Tennis Club for over 21 years. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in securing funding for new courts and a clubhouse.
The event also recognized the artistic contributions of Geoff Glare and Anne Looney, who received the Environment, Conservation and the Arts Community Award for their photography of local flora and fauna, as well as their commitment to the performing arts.
The Spirit of the Community Award was awarded to the Wonthaggi SES Unit for their 50 years of dedicated service. Accepting the award, SES Controller Jarryd Hargraves spoke about the challenges faced by the unit, including equipment shortages and funding issues. He noted that the unit now benefits from a state-of-the-art facility located in Wonthaggi.
The ceremony served not only to honor these individuals but also to reinforce the community’s commitment to supporting one another and fostering a spirit of collaboration and resilience.
