Saint Francis of Assisi’s 800th Anniversary Sparks Global Reflection

The year 2026 marks a significant milestone as it commemorates the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. Scheduled for October 3, 2026, this anniversary highlights the enduring legacy of a figure revered not only within Christianity but also across diverse cultures and faiths. Known for his commitment to simplicity, love for creation, and evangelical poverty, Francis serves as an enduring model of Christian discipleship.

Historic Event in Assisi

To commemorate this occasion, the body of Saint Francis will be made visible to the faithful from February 22 to March 22, 2026. This unprecedented event will take place in the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi, allowing believers a unique opportunity to venerate the remains of a man often referred to as “alter Christus” (another Christ). The announcement was made on the saint’s feast day at the Sacred Convent in Assisi, marking a moment of profound spiritual significance for the Franciscan family and the broader Christian community.

The Vatican has officially approved this event under the authority of Pope Leo XIV. The body will be relocated from its tomb in the crypt to a prominent position at the foot of the papal altar in the lower church of the Basilica. This occasion will not merely focus on death; rather, it embodies what Saint Francis called “sister death” – a celebration of life achieved through self-giving.

Saint Francis and Croatia: A Historical Connection

The bond between Saint Francis and Croatia is often overlooked, yet it is richly documented. Evidence indicates that Francis visited Croatian territories in the 13th century, with significant historical connections emerging from his presence in the region. The journal “Kačić” published findings from an international scientific conference held in Split and Zadar in 2012, emphasizing the impact of Francis on Croatian history and spirituality.

In 1215, while returning from the Holy Land, Francis reportedly arrived in what is now Croatia due to adverse weather conditions. His first biographer, Fra Thomas of Celano, recounted how Francis had to stop at a port in Slavonia, a medieval name for the eastern coast of the Adriatic, specifically the Croatian coast.

The Monastery of St Francis in Zadar holds historical significance as the first communal monastery of the Franciscan Order in Dalmatia. Tradition asserts that Francis visited Zadar during his journey toward the Holy Land in 1212. Historical records, including a will from Desa Lukin of Trogir, confirm that property was donated to the Franciscans around this time, where they established what is believed to be the first Franciscan monastery in Croatia.

Further, in 1219, Francis is said to have visited Zagreb while returning from Syria. Historical accounts suggest that he stayed with Katarina Galović, in a location that now houses a chapel dedicated to him in the Franciscan monastery at Kaptol.

The legacy of Saint Francis in Croatia is also enriched by folklore, including a tale from his departure from Zagreb, which led to the naming of Vrapče. According to tradition, Francis was robbed as he left, and in his gentle manner, he remarked, “Ah, vrapci, vrapci (sparrows)!”

The establishment of the Hungarian Province was significantly influenced by Francis’s interactions in Croatia. It is believed that he assigned members to create a presence in Zagreb shortly after his visit, marking the official arrival of the Franciscans in the region.

The 800th anniversary of Saint Francis’s death serves as a powerful reminder of his lasting impact. Observances of this jubilee are not merely retrospective; they call for spiritual renewal and reflection. For the faithful, particularly in Croatia, it is a moment to celebrate deep-rooted historical ties to Saint Francis, which have shaped the spiritual landscape of the region.

As the world prepares for this remarkable commemoration, the life and teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi continue to inspire individuals seeking peace, love, and community in their lives.
