Tim Walter, the founder of the Farmers’ Challenge at the Newdegate Machinery Field Days, is celebrating three decades of farming in the community of Newdegate, Western Australia. Originally from Bridgetown, Walter moved to Newdegate after visiting a friend’s farm, seeing potential in the Wheatbelt region for his family and agricultural aspirations.
As a broad-acre cropper who also manages sheep and cattle, Walter has established a life that he describes as immensely fulfilling. “It’s been a great move for us,” he stated, reflecting on the community’s warmth and support. His family has thrived in Newdegate, raising three boys and becoming integral members of the local society.
Walter’s inspiration for the Farmers’ Challenge came from observing similar successful events such as the Dowerin Machinery Field Days, Wagin Woolorama, and Mingenew Midwest Expo. He envisioned a competitive series of events that would engage local farmers in a physical and entertaining manner. “We thought we would just set up a series of events where it’s sort of a physical challenge and is a race against the clock,” he explained.
The Farmers’ Challenge has become a much-anticipated feature of the Newdegate Machinery Field Days, which will take place on September 3-4, 2025. Walter noted that the event has been well supported by the community and features attractive prize money to encourage participation. “It’s gone really well, it’s been well supported,” he said, emphasizing the community-driven nature of the event.
Over the years, Walter has played a pivotal role in the Newdegate Machinery Field Days, starting as a volunteer and eventually becoming the site manager and now the organiser of the Farmers’ Challenge. Each year, he designs the competition courses to ensure they are both challenging and entertaining for participants and spectators alike. “We try and run it as a fast and furious type of challenge,” he said, highlighting the excitement generated during the events.
Typically, between eight and sixteen teams compete in the challenge, with four events happening simultaneously. Walter’s enthusiasm for the sport is evident, as he describes it as a “very good spectator sport.” The challenge not only entertains but also fosters camaraderie among participants, reinforcing the close-knit community spirit of Newdegate.
The Newdegate Machinery Field Days serve as a significant draw for the region, attracting visitors from across Western Australia, including as far as Esperance. Walter noted that the event is a highlight for the town and the Great Southern region, showcasing agricultural innovation and fostering connections among farmers.
Looking ahead, the Farmers’ Challenge is now firmly integrated into the field day program, having solidified its place as a community event since its inception in 2023. As Walter reflects on his thirty years in Newdegate, he expresses gratitude for the relationships built and the sense of belonging his family has found.
With the upcoming field days on the horizon, Walter remains committed to ensuring the event continues to thrive, providing entertainment and fostering community spirit for years to come.
