The Upper Murray Historical Society has marked a significant milestone this year, highlighted by the recent installation of a memorial board for Jack Riley at the Corryong Cemetery. This tribute not only honors Riley but also underscores the region’s rich history and the commitment of volunteers dedicated to preserving it.
Much of this year’s activity was inspired by the 150th anniversary celebrations of Corryong, which took place in July. These festivities prompted extensive research and a renewed interest in the district’s history. The newly unveiled storyboard narrates the compelling story of Jack Riley, an Irish orphan who survived the Potato Famine and later became an inspiration for the legendary poem, “The Man from Snowy River.”
Community Engagement and Creative Projects
The society’s efforts have resulted in striking artworks that blend historic and contemporary images of Corryong, along with a detailed timeline of the town’s past. Volunteers played a crucial role in completing and editing missing chapters of Jean Carmody‘s historical research, ensuring that vital local records are preserved for future generations.
In a bid to engage younger audiences, the society launched “The Colt from Old Regret,” a collaborative effort by authors Dianne Wolfer and Erica Wagner. This initiative, along with research contributions, has informed the creation of heritage street signs and a walking trail throughout Corryong.
The society also participated in major community events, including the annual historical play at the Man From Snowy River Festival. Throughout the year, the museum welcomed thousands of visitors, sharing stories from the Upper Murray with both locals and tourists.
Unique Commemorative Projects
One of the most popular initiatives this year was the creation of a commemorative tea towel featuring surnames from the 1903 Federal Electoral Rolls of the Upper Murray. This item showcases over 230 family names from both sides of the border, providing a unique glimpse into the community at the time of Federation. The tea towel is available for purchase at the Man from Snowy River Museum or online, with proceeds supporting ongoing preservation efforts.
The year concluded with the installation of the memorial board for Jack Riley at the Corryong Cemetery, which honors both the legend and the man who inspired it. To further enhance this significant display, the society has recently secured a grant aimed at improving the Jack Riley exhibit at the museum.
Run entirely by volunteers, the Upper Murray Historical Society remains at the forefront of preserving, interpreting, and celebrating the history of the Upper Murray.
