Authorities in Perth are investigating a disturbing act of anti-Semitism after graffiti reading “kill the Jews” alongside two swastikas was discovered on a wall in Spearwood. The incident, which has drawn significant attention, was reported by the Australian Jewish Association on Monday following the emergence of a photograph depicting the defaced wall.
The graffiti was located on a brick wall of a Vibe service station on Rockingham Road. Local police, along with the State Security Investigation Group Hate Team, have initiated an investigation into the matter. As of Wednesday, law enforcement confirmed they were acting on information provided by the public. Although it remains unclear when the graffiti was applied, authorities suspect it has been present for some time. The wall has since been repainted to remove the offensive markings.
Detective Superintendent Ricky Chadwick, from the Security Operations Division, emphasized the police’s commitment to addressing hate crimes. He stated, “The WA Police Force will not stand by while individuals or groups attempt to divide our community by engaging in crimes driven by hate or prejudice.” Under the framework of Operation Dalewood, which commenced on December 15, 2023, the police aim to enhance community safety and eliminate anti-Semitic expressions following the tragic events of the Bondi Beach massacre.
Chadwick reiterated the police’s resolve to identify and prosecute those involved in racially motivated activities. “We will continue to act firmly and without hesitation to protect community harmony and uphold the law,” he added.
The incident has also sparked a strong response from local political leaders. Acting Premier Jackie Jarvis described the graffiti as “appalling” and insisted that the perpetrator should face severe penalties under new laws that impose up to five years’ imprisonment for displaying Nazi symbols. “It’s shocking… we don’t tolerate that, that’s completely unacceptable,” she stated on Tuesday. “This is the worst of the worst. That’s why we’ve toughened up those laws, because it is just appalling behaviour.”
The swift response from both the police and local government reflects a growing commitment to combatting hate speech and ensuring the safety of all community members. The investigation continues, with authorities urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
