The community is mourning the sudden passing of philanthropist and communal leader Stanley Roth, who died on Sunday. Roth was a significant figure within the Australian Jewish community, serving as a life member of UIA Australia and participating on the board of the Combat Antisemitism Movement. His contributions through the Stanley & Charmaine Roth Family Foundation supported numerous non-profit initiatives and charities.
Gary Perlstein, president of UIA NSW, described Roth’s death as a profound loss. “Stanley held a position that was truly unique. There was no one with a greater heart, a greater generosity of spirit, or a deeper commitment to giving than Stanley,” Perlstein stated. He emphasized that for Roth, philanthropy was an integral part of his identity, noting, “He gave with his whole heart, with his soul, with his time, and often with his tears.”
Perlstein highlighted Roth’s deep emotional connection to the events surrounding the October 7 attacks, stating, “He was devastated personally, emotionally, and spiritually.” Roth’s love for Israel and the Sydney Jewish community was profound, akin to the love one has for a child.
The timing of Roth’s passing resonated even more following the recent attack at Bondi Beach. “For so many in our community, Stanley represented safety, certainty, and leadership,” Perlstein remarked. His ability to provide a sense of grounding in times of fear and uncertainty was invaluable. Perlstein noted, “He set the gold standard for what was asked of us and what was required of us.”
Roth’s leadership was characterized not by titles but by his actions. Perlstein recalled a final meeting where Roth expressed a belief that everyone has a responsibility to contribute more to their community. “In one of my final meetings with him, he said to me, ‘We can all do more. We can all give more,’” Perlstein shared.
The Zionist Council of NSW recognized Roth for his unwavering commitment to the Jewish people and his philanthropic spirit. They stated, “Through his leadership and philanthropy, Stanley demonstrated a profound sense of responsibility to the Jewish people, the broader Australian community, and the State of Israel.” His legacy, they noted, will continue to impact generations to come.
Mark Leach, founder of Never Again Is Now, acknowledged Roth’s support for his organization, emphasizing his dedication to family and community. “He was manifestly committed to his family, to the greater good of Sydney, to the Jewish community, and to Israel,” Leach remarked.
Yigal Nisell, a member of the Combat Antisemitism Movement Advisory Board, described Roth as a natural leader with an inspiring love for Israel. “Stanley dedicated his life to the Jewish people in Australia, and his love and passion for the State of Israel were unwavering and inspiring,” Nisell said.
Roth is survived by his wife Charmaine and their children, Michael, Ilana, and Jessica. His contributions to the community and the enduring impact of his philanthropy will be remembered as a testament to his character and commitment to others.
