Dr. Katie Allen, a former member of Australia’s Liberal Party and advocate for trans youth, has died at the age of 59 following a battle with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of cancer. Her family announced her passing on social media on the evening of March 12, 2024, sharing heartfelt tributes and highlighting her dedication to service throughout her life.
In their statement, Dr. Allen’s family expressed their grief, saying, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Katie (Mum). She spent her life caring for others as a mother, doctor, professor, MP and friend. She is deeply loved.” They noted that she passed peacefully, surrounded by family, and lived a “full, beautiful life, all the way to the end.”
Dr. Allen was a pediatric allergist and gastroenterologist at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital before entering politics. She served as the representative for the now-abolished seat of Higgins in Victoria from 2019 to 2022. During her time in office, Dr. Allen made headlines for her courageous stand supporting trans students by crossing the floor to vote with the Labor Party on amendments to a religious discrimination bill in 2022. This legislation aimed to repeal sections of the Sex Discrimination Act that allowed religious schools to discriminate against students and staff based on sexuality and gender identity.
“I feel like I’ve stood up for what I believe in,” Dr. Allen remarked during a Q&A session following her decision to support the amendments. She expressed pride in advocating for protections for transgender school students.
In her inaugural speech to parliament in 2019, Dr. Allen emphasized the need for improved mental health services. Her personal experience with a peanut allergy later sparked her advocacy for clearer food labeling, aiming to protect individuals with allergies.
Tributes from Political Peers and Community Leaders

Opposition leader Sussan Ley described Dr. Allen as a person of “exceptional intellect, courage and warmth,” asserting that she was a “trailblazer in every sense.” Ley noted, “You only had to be in a room with her to feel her passion for women, for medicine, for education, for the Liberal Party, and above all for people who needed a helping hand.”
Stonnington Councillor Steve Stafanopoulos expressed his devastation, calling her “an extraordinary leader of our community taken far too soon from her family and friends.”
Victorian Liberal leader Jess Wilson praised Dr. Allen as one of the strongest and most intelligent individuals she had ever known, highlighting her dedication to bettering the local community and the country.
In a statement, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended his condolences, acknowledging Dr. Allen’s commitment to serving her community and her nation. “Katie believed deeply in serving her community, her nation and her fellow Australians. She dedicated her life, her talents and her courage to making our nation a better place,” Albanese said.
