Health Workers Union Strikes for Fair Pay Amid Ongoing Negotiations

Workers from the Health Workers Union (HWU) staged a strike outside Bendigo Health on January 20, 2024, demanding a minimum annual pay increase of six percent over the next two years. This action is part of a broader push for fair compensation for staff who have been vital in hospital operations, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The union’s representative, Mark Fitzgerald, expressed frustration at the perceived neglect of essential workers, including cleaners, cooks, orderlies, and theatre technicians, in discussions regarding healthcare. He emphasized that these workers have been the backbone of hospital operations, stating, “We went from hero to zero in under six years.” Fitzgerald highlighted the risks these workers took during the pandemic, asserting, “We are not greedy people; we just want a fair pay increase.”

Negotiations between the HWU and the Victorian government have been ongoing for over a year, with the government’s spokesperson stating that the Victorian Hospital Industrial Association (VHIA) is committed to continuing discussions with the union, aided by the Fair Work Commission. The spokesperson reiterated support for the healthcare workforce, affirming that contingency plans remain in place to ensure critical patient care during the strike.

The HWU’s previous enterprise bargaining agreement expired in July 2024, and the union claims that the government has made two offers that did not meet inflation rates. This strike marks the second statewide action by the HWU, following a demonstration on December 4, 2023. Fitzgerald underscored the importance of recognizing the contributions of HWU members, urging that their work should not be overlooked.

A spokesperson for Bendigo Health acknowledged the ongoing negotiations and stated that measures have been taken to minimize disruptions to patient care due to the strike. “Careful planning has taken place, and we are working closely with our teams to minimize disruption and continue delivering essential services for our community,” they said. The spokesperson also confirmed that services for urgent and emergency procedures would not be impacted by the industrial action.

As the dispute over fair pay continues, the Health Workers Union remains resolute in its mission to secure better compensation for its members, highlighting their indispensable role in the healthcare system.
