Jude Law Embraces Role as Putin in “The Wizard of the Kremlin”

Jude Law has taken on the challenging role of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the political thriller The Wizard of the Kremlin, a decision he approached without fear of potential backlash. Speaking at a press conference during the Venice Film Festival, the 52-year-old actor expressed confidence in his director, Olivier Assayas, and the film’s script, stating, “I hope not naively, but I didn’t fear repercussions.”

Law emphasized that the film aims to explore a character within a broader narrative rather than provoke controversy for its own sake. He explained, “We weren’t trying to define anything about anyone,” highlighting the film’s intent to provide an intelligent and nuanced portrayal of its subjects.

Creating an Authentic Character

In preparing for his role, Law altered his physical appearance but opted to use his natural voice instead of adopting a Russian accent. He and Assayas wanted to avoid what they considered an “interpretation of Putin.” Law mentioned their collaborative effort to create a look that was true to the character’s essence, stating, “It’s amazing what a great wig can do.” They worked closely with a skilled make-up and hair team to achieve an authentic representation of Putin during a specific period in his life.

Adapted from Guiliano da Empoli‘s book, the film chronicles Putin’s rise to power alongside his relationship with a political strategist, Vadim Baranov, inspired by the real-life figure Vladislav Sourkov. Actor Paul Dano, who portrays Sourkov, emphasized the importance of understanding the character’s internal motivations. He remarked, “If you were to just label a character like Baranov bad, it would be a massive oversimplification.”

A Cautionary Tale of Modern Politics

Director Assayas believes that the film transcends a mere examination of Putin and instead serves as a cautionary tale about the evolution of politics in contemporary society. He articulated, “The film is very much about how modern politics were invented,” linking the narrative to the rise of various authoritarian leaders globally. Assayas noted that the film addresses the “scary and dangerous situation that we all feel we’re in,” emphasizing its relevance in today’s political climate.

As audiences anticipate the release of The Wizard of the Kremlin, the discussions surrounding Law’s portrayal of Putin and the film’s broader themes continue to generate significant interest. Through a careful exploration of character and political context, the film aims to offer a profound commentary on the complexities of power and influence in our times.
