The Cook Government has initiated a trial for contactless payment technology on Perth’s public transport network, inviting eligible passengers to participate before the system is widely implemented by the end of the year. The Public Transport Authority aims to recruit 50 regular ferry users for a two-week trial, set to commence later this month.
Participants in the ferry trial will test new card readers that accept credit and debit card payments. Additionally, payments can be made using digital wallets on smartphones, smartwatches, and other wearable devices. To qualify, passengers must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid Mastercard or Visa in their name, and regularly use the ferry service.
150 additional participants will be recruited for a subsequent phase that will expand the trial to include buses and trains. Each participant will register their debit or credit card, using it to tag on and off during their journeys. They will be charged the standard cash ticket fare for each trip completed.
As an incentive, participants will receive e-gift cards for completing surveys and free parking at all train station car parks during the trial period. This initiative is part of the broader SmartRider Upgrade Project, which aims to enhance public transport accessibility and affordability.
The new contactless payment options will complement Transperth’s SmartRider system, which has been in place for over 18 years. The upcoming upgrades represent the most significant improvements to the system since its inception in 2007.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti emphasized the importance of the trial, stating, “This trial is an important step forward in our government’s efforts to make public transport more accessible and affordable.” She further noted that the feedback from trial participants will be crucial in assessing the readiness of the contactless payment methods before their rollout to the wider community.
The SmartRider Upgrade Project also includes plans for a flat fare system, which will be introduced on January 1, 2024. This change aims to provide a more economical option for Western Australians using public transport.
