Pope Leo XIV has accepted the retirement of Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila and appointed James R. Golka, currently the bishop of the Diocese of Colorado Springs, as his successor. This decision marks a significant leadership transition for the Archdiocese of Denver.
Archbishop Aquila, who has led the Denver archdiocese since 2012, submitted his retirement per the Church’s customary practice upon reaching the age of 75. His tenure included various initiatives aimed at fostering community engagement and revitalizing parish life across the region.
In a statement released by the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV expressed gratitude for Aquila’s years of service and dedication to the Catholic community. The Pope emphasized the importance of continuity in leadership, particularly as the Church navigates ongoing challenges and opportunities for growth.
James R. Golka, a native of Nebraska, has served as the bishop of Colorado Springs since 2020. He is known for his commitment to pastoral care and education, as well as his engagement with youth and local communities. Golka’s appointment reflects the Vatican’s aim to ensure vibrant leadership within the Church, particularly in regions experiencing demographic shifts.
The new archbishop will officially take over on January 1, 2024, following a formal installation ceremony. This transition is anticipated to bring new energy and initiatives to the Archdiocese of Denver, which encompasses a diverse population of Catholics throughout the area.
Golka’s leadership will be crucial as the archdiocese addresses contemporary issues, including social justice, community service, and the integration of new parishioners. His experience in Colorado Springs, a rapidly growing area, positions him well to tackle the unique challenges faced by the Denver archdiocese.
With this change, the Catholic Church in Denver prepares for a new chapter under Golka’s guidance, aiming to foster a deeper connection between the Church and its members in an evolving cultural landscape.
