Reality TV Star Matt Wright Faces Trial Over Flight Records

In a significant legal case, reality TV star Matt Wright is under scrutiny for allegedly attempting to conceal his helicopter flying hours following a fatal crash that resulted in the death of his co-star Chris “Willow” Wilson. The trial is currently taking place in the Supreme Court in Darwin, Northern Territory, more than three years after the incident in February 2022 that left pilot Sebastian Robinson severely injured.

Details of the Incident and Allegations

The crash occurred during a mission to collect crocodile eggs along the King River in Arnhem Land. The prosecution alleges that Wright sought to manipulate evidence related to his flying hours, fearing that investigators would discover discrepancies in his records. He has pleaded not guilty to three counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Crown prosecutor Jason Gullaci SC informed the jury that the charges do not pertain to the cause of the crash and that it is not alleged that Wright was responsible for Wilson’s death or Robinson’s injuries. Instead, the focus is on Wright’s alleged actions in attempting to alter or conceal documentation that could implicate him and his helicopter company.

Key evidence in the trial includes covertly recorded conversations featuring Wright at his home and on his phone, collected using listening devices. Prosecutors assert that Wright attempted to acquire the diary, phone, and pilot’s logbook belonging to Robinson while the injured pilot was hospitalized in Brisbane.

Prosecution’s Case Against Wright

According to the prosecution, Wright allegedly instructed an associate to retrieve documents from Robinson’s family and even visited Robinson’s residence in an effort to obtain the necessary information. Gullaci emphasized, “The prosecution case is that Wright was trying to get his hands on documents that might betray to investigators what was happening.”

The trial, overseen by Acting Justice Allan Blow, is expected to continue for three to five weeks as the jury hears further evidence. The outcome could have serious implications for Wright, who gained fame through his role in the reality series Outback Wrangler, and for his helicopter operations.

As the proceedings unfold, the focus remains on the integrity of aviation safety records and the accountability of those involved in the tragic incident. The jury will need to carefully consider the evidence presented to determine Wright’s involvement in the alleged attempts to obstruct justice.
