Former Richmond Football Club player Sydney Stack has expressed frustration over the delay of his aggravated assault trial, describing it as a “waste of time.” Stack, 25, appeared in Bunbury Magistrates Court on Friday facing a charge of common assault in a situation of aggravation. The trial, originally set to proceed, was postponed due to the absence of the complainant and an eyewitness, who had not been summoned by the prosecution.
During the proceedings, prosecutor Sgt Jane Gillham highlighted that the trial could not move forward as essential witnesses were unavailable. Adding to the complications, Stack informed the court that he currently lacks legal representation and is in the process of seeking a new lawyer. The details surrounding the alleged incident, which reportedly took place in Millbridge on December 4, 2024, have yet to be disclosed. It was revealed, however, that the complainant is one of Stack’s sisters, with the eyewitness also being a sibling.
Magistrate Stephen Butcher adjourned the trial to February 27 after reminding Stack of the bail conditions that prohibit him from contacting or being near the complainant. When asked if the new date was suitable, Stack hesitated, prompting Magistrate Butcher to inquire further.
“I believe this is just a waste of time for the court,” Stack stated, explaining that he regularly communicates with the complainant, who is currently experiencing a personal crisis, and that they are mutually supporting each other.
Magistrate Butcher reiterated the importance of adhering to the bail conditions, instructing Stack to cease communications with the complainant. He emphasized the need for Stack to secure legal representation before the next court date and warned against any breaches of the protective bail terms.
Stack’s professional career included 35 games over four seasons with Richmond, with his last playing season occurring in 2022. The ongoing legal issues may have significant implications for his future in football, as the trial outcome remains uncertain.
