Tasmania Seeks New Operator for Historic Low Head Site

The Tasmanian Government has announced a rare opportunity to manage the Low Head Historic Site, one of the state’s most significant heritage properties. For the first time in a decade, expressions of interest (EOI) will open later this year, inviting new operators to take charge of this unique location.

Opportunity for Growth and Heritage Preservation

Acting Minister for Parks Madeleine Ogilvie highlighted the importance of the site, which showcases Tasmania’s rich maritime history through the Pilot Station Museum. Visitors can engage with exhibits, enjoy meals from an onsite café, and access distinctive accommodations. Minister Ogilvie emphasized the need for a new operator to possess a clear vision for the site, alongside practical skills, experience, and the financial capacity to manage a complex tourism venture.

“Our State has a rich built heritage, with many iconic sites managed by the Tasmanian Government for the benefit of all Tasmanians,” Ogilvie stated. She noted that the selected operator must also appreciate the historical significance of Low Head and demonstrate a commitment to collaborating with local volunteers who contribute significantly to preserving the area’s history.

Evaluation Process and Future Steps

The Tasmanian Government plans to evaluate proposals through an independent panel, which will recommend a preferred proponent. The lease and license arrangements established for this partnership aim to ensure sustainable management under appropriate conditions and fixed terms.

The formal EOI process is set to open in the coming months, providing prospective operators ample time to consider their applications. The decision to seek a new operator reflects the government’s commitment to fostering local business involvement in managing one of Tasmania’s most treasured historic properties.

This initiative not only aims to enhance the visitor experience at the Low Head Historic Site but also to preserve and promote Tasmania’s vibrant cultural heritage for future generations.
