A teacher from Frederick Irwin Anglican School in Mandurah, Western Australia, has given birth to a child reportedly fathered by a former student she is accused of sexually assaulting. Naomi Tekea Craig, 33, was charged by WA Police with multiple offences after allegedly engaging in “persistent sexual conduct” with the male student between 2024 and 2025.
Court documents reveal that Ms. Craig faces seven charges, including two counts of sexual penetration of a child aged over 13 and under 16, as well as persistent sexual conduct with a child under 16. She was also charged with possessing child exploitation material. Following the initial accusations, the police conducted DNA testing on a sample from her placenta, which allegedly established a link between the newborn and the accused victim.
Legal Proceedings and School Response
Ms. Craig has not yet entered a plea regarding the charges. She is scheduled to appear in the Mandurah Magistrates Court on January 27, 2024, via video link. The police have not disclosed the specifics of the three additional offences she now faces, citing standard practices for cases involving minors.
In response to the unfolding situation, Frederick Irwin Anglican School communicated with parents and guardians, clarifying that the alleged victim is no longer a student at the institution. The school confirmed that Ms. Craig has been suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation and any subsequent prosecution. A letter sent to families stated, “I regret to inform you that a teacher from our school has been arrested by police and charged with child-related offences not involving any current student.”
The letter reassured parents that there is no reason for concern regarding the safety of other children at the school.
Background on the Case
Ms. Craig, who previously taught under the surname Woods, was on maternity leave in December 2023, as noted in a school newsletter. Reports indicate that she was married and had another child when the allegations surfaced.
Frederick Irwin Anglican School operates a co-educational secondary school and primary school campus in Meadow Springs, along with an additional primary campus in Halls Head. The school has emphasized its commitment to child safety and has begun reviewing policies in light of the allegations against Ms. Craig.
As legal proceedings continue, the community remains vigilant and concerned about the implications of this case.
