Thousands March in Rome for Fourth Day of Pro-Palestinian Protests

Large crowds gathered in central Rome on October 7, 2023, for the fourth consecutive day of pro-Palestinian protests. The demonstrations followed Israel’s interception of an international flotilla attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, resulting in the detention of several activists. Participants carried banners and Palestinian flags while chanting slogans such as “Free Palestine.” Organizers aimed to attract at least one million demonstrators to the event.

Among the protesters was Francesco Galtieri, a 65-year-old musician from Rome. He expressed the importance of individual mobilization, stating, “If we don’t all mobilise, then nothing will change.” The protests have not only been significant in Rome but have also occurred daily in multiple cities across Italy since the flotilla was blocked.

As protests erupted across Europe and beyond, Italy saw a particularly strong response. On October 6, unions organized a general strike in solidarity with the flotilla, resulting in demonstrations nationwide that reportedly drew more than two million participants, according to organizers. The Italian interior ministry estimated attendance at around 400,000.

Italy’s right-wing government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has publicly criticized the protests. Meloni suggested that some demonstrators were using the situation as an excuse for an extended weekend. She also condemned protesters for defacing a statue of the late Pope John Paul II outside Rome’s main train station, where pro-Palestinian groups had set up a picket. In her statement, Meloni remarked, “They say they are taking to the streets for peace, but then they insult the memory of a man who was a true defender and builder of peace. A shameful act committed by people blinded by ideology.”

The ongoing protests reflect a growing political and social movement within Italy, highlighting the public’s response to international humanitarian crises. As the situation continues to unfold, the protests are expected to persist, with demonstrators calling for greater awareness and action regarding the conflict in Gaza.
