Chimpanzees Show Enhanced Cooperation in Larger Groups

Research indicates that chimpanzees are more adept at solving resource dilemmas when working in larger and more tolerant groups. A new study from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, highlights how cooperation and leadership play crucial roles in sustainable resource management among these primates, our closest living relatives.

In the study, chimpanzees faced a controlled situation mimicking resource dilemmas. The participants were presented with a bowl of yoghurt, which could only be accessed by dipping sticks into it. A lid was supported by the sticks, and if all sticks were removed, the lid would close completely, preventing access to the treat. The experiment aimed to explore the conflict between individual gain and group sustainability.

Kirsten Sutherland, the study’s first author, explained, “There was a clear conflict between feeding individually and keeping the resource available for the group.” To maintain access to the yoghurt, at least one chimpanzee had to refrain from eating. The researchers tested pairs of chimpanzees as well as groups of four to assess the impact of group size on cooperation.

In total, 24 groups participated, completing 18 test trials and 18 control trials. The control trials offered no dilemma, allowing researchers to compare behavior in a relaxed setting. Surprisingly, pairs of chimpanzees did not effectively solve the resource dilemma. They typically removed all the sticks quickly, making the yoghurt inaccessible.

In contrast, groups of four demonstrated a significant improvement, leaving at least one stick in the pool for an average of 83 seconds longer compared to pairs. Sutherland noted, “The same chimpanzees that failed to overcome the dilemma in pairs showed greater sensitivity when placed in a larger group.”

Cooperation flourished in groups characterized by high social tolerance, where members spent time close to each other with minimal aggression. Interestingly, the research revealed that the resource remained accessible for longer when the highest-ranked chimpanzee was the one without a stick.

Daniel Haun, the senior author of the study, commented, “This shows that dominance does not necessarily undermine cooperation. What matters is how dominant individuals use their position.” When high-ranking chimpanzees exhibited restraint, the group as a whole benefitted. Conversely, if dominant individuals took more than their fair share, collective sustainability was jeopardized.

These findings enhance the understanding of social dynamics in chimpanzee groups, contributing to the broader dialogue on dominance, social tolerance, and prosocial behavior in these primates. The study suggests that chimpanzees can manage resources sustainably, particularly in the presence of a tolerant and less competitive dominant.

Moreover, the results raise important considerations for research methodologies in studying non-human primate cooperation. Many experiments focus on pairs of apes; however, this study indicates such designs might not accurately reflect their social behavior. Haun emphasized, “Chimpanzees are adapted for group living. If we want to understand their cooperative abilities, we need to study them in social contexts that reflect that reality.”

This research underscores that sustainable cooperation among chimpanzees relies not only on group size but also on the social dynamics and behaviors of individuals in power. The implications of these findings extend beyond chimpanzees, offering insights that may be relevant to human societies as well.
