Hawks Alumni Rally for Support of Yerbury Lab Research

During a pre-game event on March 14, 2024, prior to the Illawarra Hawks’ victory against the Brisbane Bullets, alumni and guests gathered to support the important work of the Yerbury Lab at the University of Wollongong (UOW). The event highlighted the research dedicated to finding a cure for motor neuron disease (MND) in memory of the late Professor Justin Yerbury, a former player for the Hawks, who has left a significant legacy in the field of scientific research.

Emphasizing Community Support for Research

The Illawarra Mercury partnered with UOW researchers to appeal to attendees for donations to the Yerbury Lab, underscoring the lab’s critical role in advancing MND research. UOW Vice Chancellor Max Lu expressed pride in the lab’s internationally significant work, stating that it continues the momentum initiated by Professor Yerbury. “The research taking place right here in Wollongong has the potential to change people’s lives,” Lu noted, emphasizing the broader impact of the lab’s efforts.

Kathy Sharpe, the editor of the Illawarra Mercury, reinforced the importance of raising awareness alongside financial contributions. “While we are appealing to Hawks fans and the wider community to donate to the lab through the MND Research Fund, it’s essential to use our platform to create awareness,” she stated. The event coincided with the Hawks’ alumni round, making the appeal particularly poignant as attendees reflected on Yerbury’s contributions both on and off the court.

The Impact of the Yerbury Lab

The Yerbury Lab is dedicated to pioneering research in the fight against MND, a condition that affects thousands of individuals globally. The lab’s initiatives focus on understanding the underlying mechanisms of the disease, with the hope of developing more effective treatments and ultimately a cure. Donations to the MND Research Fund directly support these vital efforts.

As the Hawks’ alumni and their families gathered for the game, the atmosphere was charged with a sense of community and purpose. The event served not only as a celebration of sports but also as a reminder of the collective effort needed to address critical health issues. The Illawarra Hawks continue to engage their fan base in meaningful ways, demonstrating that sports can play a significant role in raising awareness and fostering support for important causes.

For those interested in contributing to the Yerbury Lab, further information is accessible through the MND Research Fund, where community members can learn how their donations can make a difference in the ongoing battle against MND.
