Isabelle Duff, a rising star in agricultural innovation, is leveraging her background and education to transform the industry through genetic research. Growing up on a farm in New South Wales, she developed a passion for science that shaped her educational path. This journey led her to pursue a Bachelor of Advanced Science and Commerce at the University of New South Wales, where she majored in Genetics and Accounting.
Her hands-on experience in agriculture began during a gap year spent working full-time on her family’s mixed farming operation, which encompasses sheep, cattle, and cropping. This experience deepened her understanding of animal health and land management, igniting her ambition to bridge the gap between research and practical applications in the field. Isabelle aims to make innovative genetic advancements accessible and cost-effective for Australian producers.
Expanding Horizons Through Scholarships
Isabelle’s commitment to agriculture extends beyond her academic achievements. She gained valuable insight into agricultural technology while working at a vertical spinach farm in Sydney. “It was chaotic, but I thrived on it. Turns out, startups and farming have a lot in common,” she reflects on her time there.
A pivotal moment in her career came when she received the Horizon Scholarship, sponsored by AgriFutures Australia. This program offers financial support, mentorship, and industry placements, which are designed to accelerate the careers of young leaders in agriculture. “I met a Horizon Scholar at an agricultural conference when I was eighteen. She told me all about it and it sounded amazing, so I wrote ‘apply for Horizon Scholarship’ in my notes and waited four years,” Isabelle explained. “Now, I’m here, and it’s everything I hoped for.”
Dallas Pearce, Project Manager at evoke AG and Global Innovation Networks at AgriFutures Australia, highlights the scholarship’s significant impact on the careers of its recipients. “This unique program not only helps scholars develop practical skills but also opens doors to diverse learning opportunities,” she noted. Pearce emphasized that the Horizon Scholarship is a career accelerator, boasting a high conversion rate into employment, positioning scholars like Isabelle for long-term success.
Shaping the Future of Agriculture
Isabelle’s impressive background and unwavering drive position her as a future leader in the agriculture sector. Pearce stated, “The Horizon Scholarship will further enhance her skills and experiences, allowing her to make significant contributions to the industry. We are confident Isabelle will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of agriculture through her expertise and innovative mindset.”
AgriFutures Australia remains dedicated to supporting the next generation of leaders who will drive the future prosperity of Australian rural industries and communities. The AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship is awarded to students studying agriculture-related undergraduate degrees or Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths/Finance (STEM) degrees with relevant majors that align with agriculture.
Applications for the 2026 AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship are currently open and will close on January 26, 2026. This initiative not only fosters talent but also emphasizes the vital role that young innovators like Isabelle play in the evolution of agriculture, paving the way for a more sustainable and productive future.
