Growing up on a farm in Australia, she cultivated a deep-rooted curiosity about science while helping her family manage a mixed farming operation. Her hands-on experience has shaped her ambition to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and practical farming applications.
Growing up surrounded by sheep, cattle, and crops, Isabelle’s formative years were spent questioning everything about the world around her. “I grew up on a farm, following Dad around in the ute, asking endless questions,” she recalls. This enthusiasm for understanding the ‘why’ behind agricultural practices led her to pursue a Bachelor of Advanced Science and Commerce at the University of New South Wales, where she majored in Genetics and Accounting.
Hands-On Experience and Education
Before entering university, Isabelle dedicated a gap year to her family’s farm, deepening her knowledge of animal health and land management. This experience confirmed her desire to integrate innovative genetic research into commercial farming, making advancements accessible and affordable for Australian producers.
In addition to her studies, Isabelle worked at a vertical spinach farm in Sydney, where she honed her problem-solving skills in the agricultural technology sector. Reflecting on that time, she stated, “It was chaotic, but I thrived on it. Turns out, startups and farming have a lot in common.”
Her commitment to the field has been recognized through the prestigious Horizon Scholarship, sponsored by AgriFutures Australia. This scholarship provides financial support, mentorship, and industry placements to young leaders in agriculture, helping them accelerate their careers. Isabelle’s journey with the scholarship began when she encountered another Horizon Scholar at an agricultural conference at the age of eighteen. Inspired, she made a note to apply, which led her to this transformative opportunity.
