Research Initiative to Address Workforce Pressures in Australian Agriculture

A new research initiative aims to assess workforce pressures in the Australian agriculture sector, focusing specifically on the Darling Downs and Toowoomba regions. This analysis, conducted by AgriFutures Australia in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, seeks to identify key issues affecting agricultural productivity and workforce availability.

As one of Australia’s most significant food and fibre production areas, the Darling Downs spans a diverse range of agricultural activities, including grains, dairy, eggs, horticulture, and major feedlot operations. However, this region contends with increasing competition for labor from expanding sectors such as health, manufacturing, construction, and a burgeoning AgTech industry.

Simon Vincent, General Manager of Rural Futures at AgriFutures Australia, emphasized the critical nature of this research. He stated, “The Toowoomba and Darling Downs region is a major driver of Australia’s food and fibre production, and its workforce challenges are both unique and highly instructive for national planning.” Vincent noted that engaging directly with local employers, workers, and community leaders is essential to understanding the current dynamics and identifying effective support measures for the region’s agricultural sectors.

Comprehensive Stakeholder Engagement

The research aims to involve various stakeholders across the agricultural supply chains, communities, and industries. The focus is on understanding how best to support the region’s food production capabilities moving forward. Vincent highlighted the importance of including all components of the workforce ecosystem in this analysis. “We want to ensure that every part of the workforce ecosystem, from training providers to employers and councils, is part of the study,” he said.

The findings from this research are expected to provide valuable insights into workforce strategies that can enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability in the region. The final report is anticipated to be released by mid 2026, contributing to ongoing discussions about the future of agricultural employment in Australia.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to addressing the pressing workforce challenges faced by the agricultural sector, which is vital not only for the economy but also for food security. As the research unfolds, the insights gained will be pivotal in shaping policies and practices that support the ongoing development of the industry.
