A chaotic scene unfolded during the National Basketball League (NBL) clash between the Adelaide 36ers and the Brisbane Bullets, resulting in multiple ejections and a lengthy delay. Ultimately, the 36ers secured a convincing victory, defeating the Bullets 107-74 and clinching a spot in the Ignite Cup final scheduled for next month.
The game, held on March 15, 2024, saw the 36ers dominate three of the four quarters. Tensions escalated in the final quarter when Bullets guard Hunter Maldonado tangled with Adelaide’s Nick Rakocevic under the basket. The two players fell into the front-row seating, sparking a brawl that involved Terry Taylor, another Brisbane guard, who put Rakocevic in a headlock. All three players were ejected from the game, along with Brisbane’s Taine Murray, Alex Ducas, and Sam McDaniel, who were inactive players but joined the fray from the bench.
This loss marked the Bullets’ 16th defeat in their last 17 games, a stark contrast to their earlier season performance. The team has struggled significantly, suffering losses of 32 and 38 points in their previous matches. Despite the team’s struggles, forward Jacob Holt showcased his potential with a career-high 24 points.
The 36ers opened the game with impressive efficiency, making 10 of their first 12 field goals and taking a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter. John Jenkins led Adelaide’s scoring with 19 points, while Bryce Cotton contributed 22 points, along with seven assists and five rebounds. The visitors maintained a balanced offensive strategy, with Isaac Humphries and Flynn Cameron each adding 16 points to the scoreboard.
Brisbane managed to win the second quarter, reducing their deficit to just six points at halftime. This resurgence was fueled by Holt’s growing confidence, as the Bullets forced ten turnovers by the break. However, the second half saw Adelaide respond with a seven-point run to regain control of the game. The 36ers pulled ahead decisively, scoring 39 points in the final quarter while limiting Brisbane to just nine points.
The outcome not only highlights the 36ers’ dominance but also underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the Bullets, who continue to grapple with injuries and inconsistent performances. With the Ignite Cup final on the horizon, the 36ers will aim to build on this momentum, while the Bullets will need to regroup and find their footing in the remaining matches of the season.
