Breakers Secure Crucial 101-96 Win Against Hawks in NBL Clash

The New Zealand Breakers defeated the Illawarra Hawks 101-96 in a crucial National Basketball League (NBL) match on March 3, 2024. This victory not only bolstered the Breakers’ playoff hopes but also hindered the Hawks’ title defense, following a disappointing loss just days earlier.

After suffering a significant 41-point defeat to the Sydney Kings, the Breakers entered the game with renewed determination. They quickly established momentum, driven by strong performances from key players. The match remained competitive, with both teams exchanging leads throughout. However, it was a pivotal over-and-back violation called against Hawks’ import Tyler Harvey that shifted the game in the Breakers’ favor in the final moments.

Karim Lopez, a promising young talent, showcased his skills with an impressive performance, contributing 16 points, six assists, five steals, and four rebounds. His reverse lay-up late in the game was crucial for maintaining the Breakers’ lead. Rob Baker, who faced criticism from head coach Petteri Koponen after the previous game, responded effectively by scoring 17 points and securing six rebounds.

Key Contributions and Game Highlights

Parker Jackson-Cartwright led the scoring for New Zealand with 23 points, alongside eight assists and seven rebounds. Sam Mennenga and Izaiah Brockington also made significant contributions, scoring 21 and 20 points, respectively. The Breakers maintained their composure in the closing stages, successfully converting their last six free-throw attempts to seal the victory.

The Hawks, despite a spirited comeback that saw them narrow a 15-point deficit in the third quarter, struggled with consistency. They committed 19 turnovers throughout the match, which ultimately proved costly. Quentin Peterson led Illawarra’s scoring with 22 points, while Harvey and others added 14 points each.

In retrospect, coach Justin Tatum expressed disappointment in his team’s performance, highlighting a lack of resilience and competitiveness against their opponents. “They just want it more,” he stated. “It’s unfortunate that my team doesn’t show the same resilience against anyone.”

Implications for the Playoff Race

With this win, the Breakers improved their season record to 9-15, keeping them in contention for a playoff spot as they chase sixth-placed Tasmania, who currently stands at 12-13. This victory marks the third time this season that New Zealand has triumphed over Illawarra, following earlier wins of 29 and 42 points.

Following the match, Coach Koponen expressed pride in his team’s response. “We were much better. The energy, the fight – everything was there,” he remarked. As the NBL season progresses, the Breakers will look to build on this momentum, aiming for a strong finish as they pursue a spot in the postseason.
