Brumbies’ Rob Valetini Aims for Celebration in Fiji on 100th Match

Rob Valetini, the standout backrower for the ACT Brumbies, is preparing for a significant milestone as he gears up for his 100th Super Rugby match on March 16, 2024. The match will see the Brumbies face the Drua in Ba, located in the north-west of Viti Levu, Fiji. Valetini, whose parents hail from Fiji, has arranged for his family to travel from Melbourne to support him during this important occasion.

“My parents have made a lot of sacrifices in my life, and I thought it would be nice to have it in Fiji and bring them over,” Valetini said. He expressed his hope that his brother, Kemu Valetini, a flyhalf, will also be selected to play for the Drua, making the event even more special.

Brumbies Seek Victory in Challenging Conditions

The Brumbies currently lead the Super Rugby Pacific standings with three wins from four matches. Despite their strong position, they are aware of the challenges that come with playing in Fiji, especially against a determined Drua side currently placed ninth. In 2025, Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham opted to rest many star players, yet his young team made history by becoming the first Australian side to win on Fijian soil.

“The boys are preparing well this week already, and we’re pretty hungry to get over the weekend and get into this game,” Valetini stated. He emphasized the importance of preparation, referencing last year’s successful approach that led to a solid performance in Fiji.

Valetini’s Journey and Future Aspirations

At 27 years old, Valetini is feeling fit and ready to contribute significantly after a frustrating period marred by injuries. He missed the opening five rounds of Super Rugby and had limited participation in the British and Irish Lions Tests. “The past two seasons, I’ve got injured during pre-season, so it was just good to get through a good pre-season and get the body right,” he explained. “Last year was quite frustrating with all the injuries I was getting, so I’m feeling good at the moment.”

Looking ahead, Valetini has been linked with a potential move to Japan following the 2027 Rugby World Cup. He acknowledged the ongoing “rumours” but remains focused on his performance with the Brumbies and the upcoming home World Cup in Australia. “The next two years are really big for rugby in Australia and myself, so I’m really just focused on my performances this year,” he said.

As Valetini prepares to celebrate his milestone with family and friends in Fiji, the Brumbies are poised to take on the Drua, aiming to secure another win in their campaign. The combination of personal achievement and team ambition sets the stage for an exciting encounter on Fiji’s home turf.
