Caroline Springs Falcons have secured their place in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Roy Picone Shield grand final following a decisive victory over Pascoe Vale Hadfield. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the Falcons, who have faced challenges in previous seasons but finally triumphed on March 17, 2024.
The Falcons demonstrated a well-rounded performance throughout the match, showcasing their strength both with the bat and ball. Coach Ian Shattock expressed relief and excitement about reaching the grand final at last, stating, “It was a pretty good weekend with our thirds winning through as well. It was a big day for us. We’ve still got one more to go.” The victory was particularly meaningful for Pascoe Vale Hadfield, as it marked their first finals appearance since the merger of two clubs.
Winning the toss, the Falcons opted to field first, which proved to be a strategic decision. The Panthers were bowled out for just 162 runs in the 69th over, thanks to an outstanding display from the Falcons’ bowlers. Gavin McCallum led the charge, taking 4 wickets for 31 runs, a decision that Shattock attributed to his well-timed rest in the final round of the season. Braedon Mulheran also contributed significantly, claiming two wickets.
The Falcons faced a challenging period late on the first day but managed to navigate it without losing any wickets, finishing at 0-22. Shattock praised the solid performances of Akeem Springer and Gurpreet Suri, who steadied the innings during this crucial phase.
On day two, the Falcons lost an early wicket but maintained control over the run chase, ultimately finishing with a total of 2-164 in just 42 overs. Salman Alfridi emerged as the standout player, scoring an impressive 90 not out off 99 balls. Shattock lauded Alfridi’s performance, stating, “He was a class above. He was sensational and got himself in and showed his strokes around the ground.” Rukshan Fernando supported him well, remaining 20 not out as they completed the chase with ease.
Looking ahead, Caroline Springs will face Point Cook in the grand final. Point Cook advanced by narrowly defeating Point Cook Centrals in the other semi-final. Earlier in the season, Point Cook had bested the Falcons in their only previous encounter, adding an element of intrigue to the upcoming match.
Shattock remains optimistic as his team approaches the grand final. “We’ll worry about ourselves to be cherry ripe and ready to go,” he said. He also noted that the club is poised to host grand finals for both their first and third XIs, making the upcoming weekend a significant occasion for the entire club.
As the Falcons prepare for the championship match, the excitement among players and fans alike continues to build, with hopes high for a successful conclusion to their season in the Roy Picone Shield.
