Chicago Bears rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III suffered a quad injury during the final play of the team’s 42-38 defeat against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night. Although the injury is not believed to be serious, he was carted off the field after he attempted to walk with the assistance of trainers. According to a source cited by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Burden is scheduled for additional testing on Monday.
The injury is particularly unfortunate for Burden, who had an impressive performance in the game, recording a season-high eight receptions for 138 yards and one touchdown. Over the past three games, he has emerged as a vital asset to the Bears’ offense, amassing 18 receptions for 289 yards. This marks a significant contribution for a player drafted in the second round of this year’s draft, bringing his season totals to 44 catches for 617 yards and two touchdowns.
Bears head coach Ben Johnson did not provide specific details regarding Burden’s injury during the post-game press conference. However, Burden himself downplayed the situation, expressing to reporters that he had given his best effort and felt “tired as hell” after the game.
The timing of Burden’s injury is particularly challenging for the Bears, who have been without their top receiver Rome Odunze for the last four games due to a foot injury. Despite these setbacks, the Bears have managed to secure the NFC North title and are aiming for a higher playoff seed as they prepare for their upcoming match against the Detroit Lions in Week 18.
As the team continues to navigate through injuries, Burden’s status will be closely monitored in the coming days. His contributions will be crucial as the Bears look to maintain momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
