Colts Name Anthony Richardson Starting QB for Preseason Opener

The Indianapolis Colts have named Anthony Richardson as their starting quarterback for the preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens on August 10, 2023. This decision marks a significant moment in the ongoing competition between Richardson and Daniel Jones, as both players vie for the starting role. Coach Shane Steichen confirmed the announcement following a joint practice with the Ravens at their training facility.

During the practice session, both quarterbacks showcased their skills against a formidable Ravens defense. Steichen emphasized that this decision is part of a broader strategy to evaluate both players through practices, joint scrimmages, and preseason games before finalizing the starting position. Jones is set to start the second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on August 16 in Indianapolis, allowing both quarterbacks the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities.

Richardson is expected to see around “a quarter and a half” of action against the Ravens, while Jones will likely play for “about half a quarter.” Both quarterbacks will face challenges, as key starters on the Colts will not participate, limiting Richardson’s access to his full roster of playmakers and offensive linemen. The Ravens are also anticipated to rest their starters, creating a unique context for the matchup.

Steichen remarked on the practice, noting, “I thought there were some really good things being done offensively. I thought both quarterbacks did some really good things.” This feedback suggests a positive atmosphere as both players continue to develop their skills in preparation for the regular season.

The Colts have taken a measured approach in deciding their starting quarterback. Steichen has committed to delaying the decision until after the preseason, prioritizing thorough evaluation over haste. Richardson, who has held the starting position for the past two seasons, has faced challenges with consistency, completing just 50.6% of his career pass attempts. Additionally, he has struggled with injuries, missing 17 games throughout his career.

Jones, on the other hand, is attempting to revive his career after being released from the New York Giants last season. He signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Colts, eager to prove himself and reclaim a starting role in the league.

As the preseason unfolds, all eyes will be on Richardson and Jones, as their performances will play a critical role in shaping the Colts’ roster for the upcoming season. The decision to start Richardson signifies the team’s commitment to fostering competition and finding the best fit for the quarterback position.
