Eliud Kipchoge Faces Challenges Ahead of Sydney Marathon Debut

Eliud Kipchoge, the world-renowned marathon runner, prepares for a pivotal moment in his career as he heads to Australia for the Sydney Marathon on August 31, 2024. This event marks a significant chapter in Kipchoge’s illustrious journey, as he attempts to regain his winning form after a challenging period marked by personal and professional setbacks.

Each day at the Kaptagat training camp in rural Kenya, Kipchoge rises at 5:45 AM to begin his rigorous training regimen. For two decades, he has committed to this routine, running alongside elite athletes and navigating the challenging terrain. “I’m out and I’m training twice a day, trying to cover between 25 to 30 kilometres every day,” he states, underscoring his dedication. Despite the sacrifices required, Kipchoge continues to inspire many, striving to elevate the sport of running globally.

Kipchoge’s training camp, situated at high altitude, is not just a place for physical preparation; it represents a sanctuary where he channels his ambition. Recently, he has been compelled to confront the emotional toll following the tragic death of fellow Kenyan marathoner Kelvin Kiptum. Kiptum, who had recently broken Kipchoge’s world record, died in a car accident in 2023. The aftermath saw Kipchoge facing a wave of online abuse and unfounded accusations of involvement in Kiptum’s death. This distressing experience has left a profound impact on him, revealing the darker side of fame.

“[It] was a really, really hard year in my career; it was a hard time for me and my family,” Kipchoge reflects, speaking about the challenges he faced. The negative sentiments from social media intensified the pressure during a period when he was also struggling with performance, including a sixth-place finish in London earlier this year. “I received a lot of bad things; that they will burn the camp, they will burn my investments,” he adds, highlighting the harsh realities that accompany his status as a sports icon.

Despite the challenges, Kipchoge remains focused on his goals. This upcoming marathon in Sydney is particularly significant as it represents the first year the event has been included in the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors, joining the ranks of renowned races in London, Chicago, and New York. With a field featuring elite competitors, including Olympic gold medallist Sifan Hassan and Ethiopian star Birhanu Legese, the competition will be fierce. Kipchoge acknowledges the rising talent that he has inspired over the years, noting the evolution of the sport he loves.

“Maybe in future generations I will inspire them,” he says. “I’m still able to train with the young generation and finish training together.” His commitment remains unwavering, with aspirations to run sub 2:02:00 in the future. The marathon world is evolving, and Kipchoge has played a crucial role in pushing boundaries, evidenced by Kiptum’s remarkable time of 2:00:35, which has reignited the conversation about the elusive two-hour barrier.

As Kipchoge prepares for the Sydney Marathon, he expresses enthusiasm for the course, noting its scenic beauty and the excitement surrounding the event. “If you see the pictures, it is beautiful,” he remarks, eager to experience the atmosphere alongside over 35,000 other participants. His presence at the marathon not only elevates the event but also serves as a testament to his resilience and passion for running.

Kipchoge’s humility is evident when discussing his legacy and the title of Greatest of All Time. He acknowledges the contributions of legends like Haile Gebrselassie, who paved the way for future athletes. “I think Haile Gebrselassie is the GOAT; he opened a lot of doors for all of us,” Kipchoge reflects. This perspective reveals his respect for those who came before him while maintaining a steadfast belief in his own journey.

As Kipchoge approaches this new challenge, he remains committed to his mission of inspiring others through running. “I want to inspire the next generation and to inspire people around the planet,” he asserts. With the Sydney Marathon on the horizon, all eyes will be on Kipchoge as he seeks to reclaim his place at the top of the marathon world.
